The recent National Strategic Review of Mathematical Sciences Research in Australia had as its first recommendation that mathematical sciences departments in every Australian university be rebuilt or maintained to provide a mutually supportive core informed by fundamental developments in the mathematical sciences. The 2007 Budget has provided an increase of $2729 per full-time student in the mathematical sciences. If passed on to the departments, this will provide a substantial improvement in recurrent funding that could be used to maintain or rebuild the staffing.
