Multiplication of decimals by a whole number

Question 2

Aussie Vaaz ice-cream stores nationwide have a variety of 15 flavours of ice-cream available for sale. Each scoop of ice-cream they serve weighs 75.5 grams. Cassandra felt extremely indulgent and asked for 3 scoops of ice-cream on her waffle cone.

How many grams of ice-cream did Cassandra have on her waffle cone?

Solution

One scoop of ice-cream weighs 75.5 grams.
Cassandra had 3 scoops, therefore 3 x 75.5 grams.
Method 1 (addition)
We know 3 × 75.5 = 75.5 + 75.5 + 75.5 = 226.5 grams
or
2 scoops would weigh 2 × 75.5 = 151 grams
3 scoops weigh 151 + 75.5 = 226.5 grams.
Method 2 (multiplication)
75.5 × 3 = 75 × 3 + 0.5 × 3
  = 225 + 1.5
  = 226.5 grams.
This suggests setting it out as follows
  7151.5
× 3
  2 2 6 .5
