NARRATOR: Question four. Find which is the larger of the following discounts - 25% of 450 or 20% of 600.

Let's consider the first discount - 25% of $450. 25% of $450 is equivalent to 25 over 100 multiplied by 450. 25 over 100 simplifies to 1 over 4, multiplied by - we'll write 450 as 450 over 1. Multiplying these fractions together gives 450 over 4. Dividing both numerator and denominator by two gives 225 divided by 2. Which gives 112.5, so $112.50.

Alternatively, we could think about 25% of 100 as being 25, and so therefore, 25% of 50 is 12.5. So 25% of 450 is 4 lots of 25 plus 12.5. So $112.50.

Let's consider the second discount - 20% of $600. 20% of $600 is equivalent to 20 over 100 multiplied by 600. 20 over 100 simplifies to one-fifth. We'll write 600 as 600 over 1. So we get 600 over 5, which gives 120, so $120.

Alternatively, we can work out 20% of 100 as being 20, so therefore 20% of 600 is 6 times 20, which is $120.

So 25% of $450 is $112.50. And 20% of $600 is $120. Therefore 20% of $600 is the larger discount.
