Summer Programs
AMSI supports various Summer Programs through its management of the International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics. Information about Summer Programs can be found on the ICEEM website.
ICE-EM/AMSI Summer Schools
The first two AMSI Summer Schools for honours and postgraduate students were held in January-February 2003 at the University of Melbourne and in January-February 2004 at the University of New South Wales. They were generously funded by grants from the Commonwealth Government’s Department of Education, Science and Training. Both were remarkably successful, attracting 110 and 138 students respectively from around Australia.
The next four Summer Schools were held at:
- Australian National University, Canberra in January 2005 (119 students)
- RMIT University, Melbourne in January - February 2006 (94 students)
- the University of Sydney in January-February 2007
- Monash University, Melbourne in January-February 2008
The 7th Summer School will be held from Monday 12 January to Friday 6 February 2009 at the University of Wollongong. Students from across Australia, as well as from overseas countries, are encouraged to participate.
Since 2005, the Summer Schools have been sponsored by the International Centre of Excellence for Education in Mathematics (ICE-EM), which is managed by the Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute. ICE-EM has been funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Education, Science and Training.
Program
The aim of the Summer Schools is to offer to students a range of courses in the mathematical sciences, some of which may not be normally available in their home institutions. The length of a Summer School is 4 or 5 weeks, and courses are normally 14 or 28 hours.
With the approval of their home university, students may take courses for credit toward their Honours degree. The courses are also open to postgraduate students from cognate areas who wish to extend their knowledge of appropriate areas of mathematics and statistics. They have proven to be of interest to students from Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Commerce (Finance, Risk Management and other quantitative areas), among others.
Students enjoy a stimulating atmosphere and opportunities for the interchange of ideas both with one another and with the lecturers. The feeling of camaraderie and the opportunity to share mathematical experiences with a larger group of students are key features of the summer schools.
