| Pi Day 2011 |
|
Australia linked with Canada over the Access Grid network to join in with Canadian Pi Day celebrations. Prof. Jonathan Borwein shared his passion for π with his lecture Life of Pi: History and Computation, taking the audience on a journey through its rich history. Prof. Borwein began with approximations of π by ancient cultures, through the work of Archimedes, Newton and others to the calculation of π in the computer age.
Prof. Borwein is currently Laureate Professor in the School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences at the University of Newcastle and Director of CARMA, the University of Newcastle Centre for Computer Assisted Research Mathematics and its Applications. Come the year 2015 when on March 14 - at both the AM and PM hours - the (US) date will read 3/14/15 at 9:26:53.589. |
