2007 ICE-EM Australian Graduate School in Mathematics

The third ICE-EM Australian Graduate School in Mathematics (IAGSM) was hosted by the University of Queensland from 2-13 July 2007. The Graduate School was the final, in the ICE-EM sponsored series.

As in previous years, two courses were offered in each of three streams.  The streams were:

  • Statistics
  • Lie Theory
  • Algebra & Combinatorics

Seven distinguished international mathematics researchers were invited to present the six courses. The attendees were chosen (on academic merit) from applications received from local, interstate and international institutions, following extensive, targeted email advertising.

IAGSM 2007 attracted a record number of 59 attendees. The breakdown by stream was: Statistics 24, Lie Theory 21, and Algebra and Combinatorics 14.

Feedback from survey’s conducted of both attendees and presenters indicated a high level of satisfaction with the courses and the event overall.

Organising Committee

  • Professor Tony Bracken (Chair)
  • Professor Peter Adams (Deputy Chair)
  • Lynda Flower (Coordinator)

In addition, the following were members of the AMSI/ICE-EM Advanced Coursework Committee:

  • Prof. Neil Trudinger , Australian National University (Chair)
  • Prof. Nalini Joshi, University of Sydney
  • Prof. Matt Wand, University of New South Wales
  • Prof. Kathy Horadam, RMIT University
  • Dr Markus Hegland, Australian National University
  • Prof. Mike Eastwood, University of Adelaide
  • Prof. Garth Gaudry, ICE-EM

Program

The IAGSM program consisted of three streams, with two 15-hour courses in each stream. The Statistics stream ran for two weeks while the Lie Theory and Algebra & Combinatorics streams ran for three weeks each.  All students were sent a Certificate of Participation following the IAGSM (see Appendix E).
