Workshop on General Relativity and Geometric Analysis PDF print email

Monash University

22-28 January 2010

The workshop will bring together many of the leaders in the field of geometric analysis. This will strengthen existing ties and inspire new collaborations and will offer Australian students and young postdocs a fantastic opportunity to interact with world class researchers.

Mathematical Relativity is one area which has benefited greatly from its interactions with geometric analysis, in particular through the work of Shing-Tung Yau and Richard Schoen, the Principal Speakers of the proposed workshop. Together with their colleagues and students (Huisken, Christodoulou, Andrews, Hassell, X-J. Wang, ....), their work has transformed our understanding of the physics and mathematics of gravitational energy and the structure of black holes. The techniques developed through this GR research are applicable across the entire spectrum of mathematics, wherever geometric differential equations arise, in subjects as diverse as epidemiology and the topology of the internet.

Message to parents:
There have been recent reports in the media regarding high-pressure techniques used in the marketing and sale of computer based mathematics learning systems. The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) is not in any way associated, connected or affiliated with companies or organisations involved in these activities, and does not endorse or vouch for such products in any way.
