"I attended the 2008 AMSI Summer School and proceeded to my PhD in 2009. Through the AMSI Summer School I had the opportunity to explore areas of mathematics, which are not taught at my parent institution and it has helped me in deciding my future area of research. However most importantly, AMSI summer school has allowed me to map out the mathematical/research community better, by getting to know who is who and who is doing what."

Libo Li, PhD Student, University of New South Wales

Summer School is a four to five week residential school for honours and post-graduate students of mathematics and cognate disciplines which offer students a range of courses in the mathematical sciences, some of which may not normally be available in their home institutions. Courses are normally 14 or 28 hours.

With the approval of their home university, students may take courses for credit toward their Honours degree. The courses are also open to postgraduate students from cognate areas who wish to extend their knowledge of appropriate areas of mathematics and statistics. They have proven to be of interest to students from Engineering, Biomedical Science, and Commerce (Finance, Risk Management and other quantitative areas), among others.

Students enjoy a stimulating atmosphere and opportunities for the interchange of ideas both with one another and with the lecturers. The feeling of camaraderie and the opportunity to share mathematical experiences with a larger group of students are key features of the summer schools.

  • "The feedback that I have had from our students has been that AMSI has always been a very enjoyable, worthwhile and intense experience. It is certainly now established as an important part of how we educate upper level mathematics students in the country, allowing students to access a breadth of options that would be uneconomic for most universities to offer on their own"

  • "The AMSI Summer Schools I have attended have been of great help: providing a quality mathematical education and the opportunity to meet many other mathematicians throughout Australia. Generally they provide a very useful means for supplementing your normal university education. Also they are an invaluable way of meeting other mathematicians throughout Australia - such networking opportunities are essential for a career in mathematics"

  • “It provides an important contribution to the training in higher mathematics by offering courses otherwise not available at the students’ home universities. I also helps to cover the needs of training of postgraduate students which allows them to both broaden and deepen their understanding of mathematics and ultimately helps them with their employment prospects”
