Updated Year 12 mathematics figures PDF print email

The number of Year 12 Advanced mathematics students in Australia increased from 20,344 in 2007 to 20,894 in 2008.  Further, in percentage terms this increase more than kept pace with the increasing Total
Australian Year 12 population.  Thus (technically) Advanced mathematics numbers are no longer in decline, but we should not get too excited about one year of modest positive growth.

The number of Intermediate mathematics students (those taking an Intermediate subject but NOT an Advanced subject) fell slightly, from  41,727 in 2007 to 41,701 in 2008.  However, this small drop constitutes a significant decline relative to the increasing Total Year 12 population.

There was a further increase in the number of Elementary students (those taking an Elementary subject but NOT an Intermediate subject NOR an Advanced subject).

International Baccalaureate student numbers are not included.

Message to parents:
There have been recent reports in the media regarding high-pressure techniques used in the marketing and sale of computer based mathematics learning systems. The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) is not in any way associated, connected or affiliated with companies or organisations involved in these activities, and does not endorse or vouch for such products in any way.
