Mathematical sciences and economic development

AMSI was established in 2002 with funding from the Victorian Department of Innovation, Industry and Regional Development.  This support arose out of the recognition of the importance of the mathematical sciences to economic development.

Industry Forums

AMSI/MASCOS Industry Forums extol the benefits of using the mathematical sciences to potential users and aim to facilitate links between mathematical scientists and industry.  Each day-long forum has a thematic or sectoral focus.

Funding

AMSI in association with the Australian Research Council (ARC) Centre of Excellence for Mathematics and Statistics of Complex Systems (MASCOS) seeks to identify industry needs and opportunities that can be addressed using the mathematical sciences. See the funding page for further information.

Corporate membership

Businesses and government organisations can now join universities in being supporting members of AMSI. The options and benefits are set out here.

Projects

AMSI and MASCOS support a range of industry projects usually conducted through member institutions with industry partners.  Industry projects aim to produce clear benefits to industry, a financial benefit to AMSI/MASCOS and whenever possible, publications for member participants.  Projects supported to date involved financial risk management, occupational health and safety, logistics, optimal design, and analysis of customer perception data. AMSI offers project management services on joint ARC Industry Linkage projects.

AMSI has access to the expertise of most of Australia's doctorate-level mathematicians and statisticians. AMSI/MASCOS will consider project proposals seeking support at any time.  This expertise includes:

  • security
  • healthcare
  • bioinformatics,
  • optimisation
  • financial mathematics and
  • risk and resource management
  • data interpretation
  • survey design.
