The Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI)

AMSI is a collaborative enterprise of member institutions throughout Australia.

AMSI was founded in 2002 in response to a need for collaboration in the mathematical sciences to strengthen mathematics and statistics especially in the universities. The highly successful Canadian institutes that encourage interactions between research, education and industry, especially Fields and the Pacific Institute for Mathematical Sciences (PIMS), have influenced its structure and operations.

From its inception AMSI has aimed to support research at all levels including mathematics in cross-disciplinary areas, business and industry; enhance the undergraduate and postgraduate experience of students in the mathematical sciences and cognate disciplines; and to improve the supply of mathematically well-prepared students entering tertiary education.

The initial $1.0M grant was obtained from the Victorian Government’s Science, Technology and Innovation infrastructure grants program. Six, now ten, leading universities entered into a Joint Venture Agreement that created the on-going framework for AMSI. Further support came from Associate members who included the CSIRO, ABS and the Australian Mathematics Trust.

In the nine years since AMSI was established $5.6M in member contributions have leveraged $16.9M in government funding and $3.1M in commercial revenues and corporate sponsorships.
