Research and Rescue
Professor Peter Doherty, joint 1996 Nobel laureate in medicine, is quoted: "There are a whole lot of areas where it is hard to get good people. It is true here and in the United States,'' he says. ''One of the worst is in statistics and mathematics. You need large numbers of people to service some of the newer areas of science such as genomics, which is very complex science and needs a lot of computational skills. There is real concern in Western societies that young people are not going into science and mathematics. Part of the reason is the career possibilities are not very clear.'' |
