The members of the AMSI consortium recognise that the mathematical sciences share common aspirations. There has never before been an Australian national institute that encompasses the broad spectrum of the mathematical sciences, from theoretical foundations of mathematics and statistics to scientific and industrial applications, as well as mathematics education. Each of these components is important for the health of our discipline.
AMSI is a national resource that can be used creatively to build the support of mathematical sciences by strengthening links with industry sectors, with other disciplines, with all levels of government and with overseas centres of research and education.
AMSI will support enrichment activities that either reinforce our existing research strengths or that help to establish new strategic initiatives.
We are able to assemble multidisciplinary teams to make progress on virtually any conceivable nominated area of research. This level of unification was instrumental in AMSI obtaining initial funding from the Victorian government, in MASCOS subsequently obtaining ARC funding as a National Centre of Excellence in the success of the AMSI bid for ICE-EM, and in obtaining a grant in 2007 from the Collaborative and Structural Reform fund.
AMSI members are obtaining a significant financial benefit from these enterprises.
Our activities enhance those of existing research groups and will lead to new wealth and to increased public awareness of mathematics and statistics.
