Interpretation with scales
When we have simple scales like the ones shown, in which the arms are of equal length, then they are balanced when the weights are equal.
The equation x+ 3 = 7 can be used to represent the fact that the scales in
the first diagram are balanced.

Subtract 3 from both sides to show that x = 4 is the solution to the
equation x + 3 = 7.

Consider another example. In the diagram below, the equation 2x = 6
represents the fact that the scales are balanced.
